I grew up in what was considered a normal household at the time. My father was a firefighter, and my mother was a retired doctor’s secretary. We ate our meals together in the kitchen, and conversations were simple—rarely educational. I was not allowed to talk back, and I never did. While this upbringing appeared stable on the surface, it did not prepare me for the traumatic events I would later face.
My parents did not know how to help me through those experiences. They never spoke about their own pasts. It wasn’t until much later in life that I understood they had both endured deeply traumatic childhoods—traumas that followed them throughout their lives. I knew I didn’t want that for myself. What I eventually learned, however, was that simply wanting to avoid pain does not mean it can be avoided.
The idea for Surviving Trauma emerged through years of counseling others. Many of the people I spoke with came from dysfunctional homes but were unaware of how unresolved patterns from their past continued to shape their present struggles. Some spoke openly about suicide. Others wanted to run away—and some did. Over time, I encountered individuals battling addiction, as well as those coping with traumatic losses and devastating life events. I searched for ways to help them heal.
As I began writing their stories down, I realized they were all searching for the same thing: a way to survive. Without that, there felt like no way forward. Then a powerful truth became clear—I was one of them. I, too, was searching for healing. My traumas were the kind that didn’t have to happen. And yet, they did.
This book is written for you—because you are reading it. My hope is that as you reflect on these stories, you will ask yourself how you might have handled similar situations. Were you traumatized? Could you have unintentionally traumatized others? Is it possible to be both a victim and a victimizer? My desire is that this book helps answer those questions and supports you in building a healthier, more compassionate life—for yourself and for those closest to you.

About The Book
Surviving Trauma
If you are interested in surviving trauma, this book has been written for you. It is also for those who are special to you because you are concerned for their wellbeing. The title is called “Surviving Trauma” because if you are still alive, you have hope! This book will hopefully open up a journey that overcomes all of your fears and thoughts of defeat. Unfortunately, people face becoming a victim of traumatic situations every day, and there is no age barrier on who becomes its Prey.
Trauma comes from events and situations that took you into a place of mental and physical hurt and pain. People I have spoken to say they feel their trauma takes over their life in a way that it overcomes them with a deep negative control. Then, try as they may, just waking up in the morning reveals that it’s always there and they can’t free themselves from this overwhelming feeling that encompasses them. They said trauma can become something that lingers in your mind, affects your moods, your sleeping patterns, your actions, and your attitude. Not only do these effects over take the victim of trauma, it overtakes the victimizer as well. This book will explain this to help you understand more of what you are thinking and feeling. The stories will detail and address various situations people must deal with on a daily basis. What happens in these stories of actual events will hopefully give you, the reader, a look into someone else’s walk in their traumatic situation. You may agree or disagree with their choice of action, and that is a good thing. It shows you are thinking of your own, a loved one, or both, ongoing battle within the mind. As you read these stories, I pray you will get healing thoughts and a glance of hope for any situation you are living with. As far as you are concerned, are you getting things that bother you or do you need help in handling your situation(s)? These stories are shared by people who want you to know, you can get to the better side for a victory. It just takes time, and we aren’t good with having to wait. The subject matter is meant for all ages to read and for all to have a positive understanding of many situations. That is why I had to leave out some graphic parts of some stories. Their situations will be purposely left to your imagination.
